Specimen Labels — privacy policy

“Specimen Labels” app, published by sogerg. Last updated: October 13, 2026.

In short

Location (GPS)

Your position is only read when you tap “Read GPS position”, in the foreground, never in the background. It is used to write the latitude, longitude, elevation and accuracy of the collecting site on your labels and in your catalog. It is stored on the phone with the field trip and is not sent to anyone. You can decline the permission and type the coordinates by hand. The app performs no online address lookup: the locality is what you type.

Camera and photo library

The camera only opens when you tap “Take a photo”, and the photo library only when you tap “Choose a photo”, to attach a picture to a lot (the lot itself or its habitat). The chosen photo is copied into the app's private storage on the phone. The microphone is never used.

Files you share

The label sheet (PDF), the exports (Darwin Core CSV, simple CSV) and the full backup (JSON, in Settings) are created on the phone and handed to the system share sheet. You choose the recipient (printing, email, cloud storage…); that service then applies its own privacy policy. These files contain your collection data, including the coordinates of collecting sites and the collector names you entered.

External links

From the settings, the app can open this page and the public sources of the label formats (museum and herbarium websites) in your browser. Opening them sends none of your collection data.

Purchases

The Pro plan (unlimited collections, all templates, unlimited labels, Darwin Core export) is an optional monthly or yearly subscription. Payment is handled entirely by the App Store (Apple) or Google Play (Google): we never see your payment details. To know whether the subscription is active on your device, the app uses the RevenueCat service (RevenueCat, Inc.), which receives an anonymous identifier generated by the app, the purchase history provided by the store, the device model and OS version, and your store country. RevenueCat receives none of your collection data (sites, positions, lots, photos). RevenueCat's policy: revenuecat.com/privacy.

On iPhone, the app offers a 21-day trial that it manages itself, with no sign-up and no payment details: the date of first launch is stored in the phone's iOS keychain (and in a small app file), never sent anywhere. On Android, the Google Play purchase is what opens Pro. Without Pro, nothing is deleted: your data stays viewable, editable and exportable.

Retention and deletion

Data stays on the phone until you delete it. You can delete a lot, a field trip or a collection in the app; uninstalling the app erases all of its data (on iPhone, only the trial start date may remain in the iOS keychain, so the trial does not restart). We hold no copy, so we can neither view nor restore it.

Children

The app collects no personal data and is not specifically directed at children.
